FacebookFace… book… Facebook Facebook… Face… book… I just join Facebook over a month ago and i am somehow addicted to it. Is Facebook another typical social networking community? Well… it used to be.

i’ve been getting invites from friends long time ago but i’ve never look into it because i thought … “Ohh.. just another Myspace, Friendster … Most likely i will not be logging into it after i register…”
So i never bother to create an account.

Joining the addictive Facebook

However, recently many of my friends join Facebook and keep telling me that it is fun. With peer influence, i decided to register and just take a peep. Within a few days, i’ve found most of my friends who are in myspace friendster also in facebook! This is crazy. I begin to update my profile and look around… then i was being superpoked, being bitten by vampire, getting gifts, got a fluff pet, confirmed friends details, being nominated for Superlatives, being challenged to a race, got a Ford Mustang, compare movie reviews and ratings, threw some turkeys and sheeps, received virtual iphone, got some growing gifts, received superwall posts…

Now i know why my friends said fun and addictive. Facebook is not just another social networking community to customize your profile, upload photos, join some fan groups and check out friends updates. Facebook is more than that! It integrates fun into your social network. Now you get to play games with your friends, compare score within your friends along with all other features of other social networking community.

Why did facebook suddenly take off so quickly?

Although Facebook’s logo looks simple and plain… but Facebook is not simple at all. The reason why it is becoming successful is due to it opening its development platform to 3rd party application developers. Facebook lets other content providers to integrate innovative applications easily to entertain facebook members. In my opinion, this is the Best Feature of facebook which makes it stands out among the rest.

Google is coming out with OpenSocial to try to fight facebook. I dont think this is going to defeat facebook yet unless Google is planning something else. Before that happens, with many high profile investors (such as Microsoft and Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing) pumping funds into Facebook, i think facebook is going to catch up myspace at a fast speed.

Tap Into Facebook Social Networking Power

If you havent join facebook yet, register an account and check it out. If you are running an entertainment-related site, it is time to tap into facebook’s huge social community by developing a facebook app related to your site, creating awareness and branding of your site.

Eg. develops Warbook, Streetrace, … develops Movies app. develops Super Wall, …

If you are just a developer, you may want to start developing application in facebook platform. With the huge community, there is definitely someone out there going to use your application or play your game. For a developer, the beauty of concentrating your efforts in developing a facebook application rather than a brand new site is… if your application is interesting, it spreads virally like wildfire without the need of tough expensive traditional methods of promoting and advertising of your ‘new site’. When that happens, you can extend to a standalone website with more features.

Facebook Marketplace

Previously facebook developers are having problems monetizing their facebook apps. The following is a list of advertising networks focus and specialize to monetize facebook apps.

Federated Media

Both RockYou and VideoEgg develop facebook applications initially and launch their own facebook ad publishing network.

There is also a facebook marketplace for those who wants to be part of the facebook application craze. Buy/sell facebook apps, hire facebook app developers. Recently there are also some facebook applications selling in digitalpoint and sitepoint forums.

EntrecardIf you have notice the sidebar on the right… yeah.. i’ve just sign up EntreCard to try out.

What is EntreCard?

It is consider your online blog “business card” in the form of a 125×125 image which represents you and your blog. The concept is to “drop” your EntreCard at other blogs who also has EntreCard widget in their blog. You will earn credit when you drop your EntreCard at other blogs and when other bloggers drop you their EntreCard. You can then use the credits to purchase 125×125 ads in the EntreCard network.

Check the site for how it works.

EntreCard is like an ad exchange network but with innovative concept. You get real valuable bloggers visiting to your blog, leave you an EntreCard. Then usually you will check back at their blog and drop them yours.

Currently, there is no official mean to purchase credits except by purchasing from fellow bloggers in the network. To me, this is like a game, visit blogs in the network daily to “drop” your EntreCard to earn credit and checking out who drop theirs into your inbox. It is actually quite tedious to do it daily… so i am not sure how long i will keep visiting… quite fun at the moment 😀

The thing which i dont like about is the ad only last for 1 day… no way to choose longer duration. And there is no good transaction history / log of how much credit i spent at which ad or how much i earn for ads that i run. I’m sure they will improve the system as time goes.

After i saw the PPC vs SEO post at Shoemoney, i think it is quite useful. I will embed the video here.

Some of the highlights:

SEO and PPC both should co-exists in marketing campaign instead of Either-Or.

  • Is your SEO bad? Good seo increase traffic and visibility.
  • How competitive is your industry sector? Need to know how many sites are competing for the keywords.
  • How many sites have similar or identical content?
  • What are you doing to stay ahead of your competition?

  • Work to improve quality score as it will lower your ppc cost
  • With PPC to provide immediate traffic, it is good for troubleshoot. Use the data to tune your organic seo.
  • Paid search is easier to predict.
  • You are in control with PPC.

Blogs should try SEO.
e-Commerce / product sales should try PPC.

Million Dollar Home PageMost should have heard about the Million Dollar Home Page, i just went to look at it briefly, it is totally sold out and i have a headache after looking at the bunch of million pixels.

After the success of Million Dollar Home Page, there are many copycats replicating it using a commercial pixel script. However, these copycat sites lacked the initial novelty and most have failed.

Few months ago, a student, Graham Langdon, at the University of Connecticut implement the idea of MillionDollarHomePage into a wiki script, Million Dollar Wiki, making the first pay-per-page model of a wiki. His purpose is to raise money to pay off his college fee and to give him the resources to open the a bar in Boston.

After reading the post of Million Dollar Wiki at Shoemoney, i have the feeling that a lot of these paid wiki sites are going to pop out in the webmaster community. Indeed, i just chanced upon a site, One Buck Wiki, through the commenter here. One Buck Wiki is similar to Million Dollar Wiki except it is cheaper 😀 and seems more successful with its marketing. I just bought a page to try it out. Although it started as one buck a page, the price of the page gradually increase as the number of pages sold increase.

I feel that it is more worth it to purchase a page in such sites than at those pixel sites. Dont think anyone is really going to click at those mini pixels.

Anyone can easily setup such paid wiki sites, however, it is how well such sites can market themselves and help the whole paid wiki pages there to increase their exposure that matters and differentiate themselves from other similar sites. If you have tried such sites, feel free to let us know your result.

Money Making TipsStuart from EarnersBlog done a brief experiment “How many of the Top Make Money Online Blogs actually show you how to Make Money” using the list Top 100 Make Money Online Blogs at 45n5. Based on his resulting experiment report, most of the top money making blogs provide lesser percentage of money making posts using last 20 posts as sample data. He emailed me asking for some comments.

Personally i find his re-ranking experiment based on last 20 posts of the top 30 money making blogs is interesting. However, i feel that the experiment criteria is not enough to justify the result. Criteria such as timeframe and frequency of posts should be in the criteria. One important unmeasurable criteria is quality of post made by those top money making blogs. Some of them although with lesser post frequency but provide very good informative insights or exclusively interesting experiment experience. Even opinions of the top bloggers regarding recent industry issues sometimes are very enlightening. Quality of post is real hard to measure. Maybe quality of a post can be measure by inbound links to the post?

Well.. this is just a brief experiment done for fun :) Nice job Stuart!

Google Page RankWith all the recent discussion of Google PageRank downgrade, i cant stop myself from joining the Google pagerank talk. You can see lots of threads about sites dropping PR. You can check out a list of solid sites having their page rank knocked down… Shoemoney hinted that his blog still maintain at nice PR.

From observation, besides the solid sites, lots of sites affected are those directory sites and blogs. Famous web directories such as avivadirectory and alivedirectory now having PR 4. When i do a google search typing their name, they are not even listed in the 1st few pages.

Before this recent PR update, many webmasters anticipating Google to update their PR hoping for the better ever since July/August… never did they know google’s algo change affect lots of sites badly.

PR Drop

Certain sites having penalty directly such as directories, blogs that re-blog other blogs content, sites like statscounter with no true content value besides having lots of backlinks, have been knocked down. You may think why your site which dont buy/sell links also getting knocked. This is actually not really your fault. Your site might probably received lots of PR juice previously… with sooo many sites losing their PR, indirectly your site is being affected… since now you are getting lesser PR juice from lower quality sites perceived by google.

PR Maintain

With so much PR juice being recover by google, for those sites that still managed to retain their high PR (PR 5 and above), they are probably consider quality sites and should consider themselves having “increase” in PR relative to the rest of the sites.

PR Increase

There are still some sites getting PR increase, this is really rare. I guess either the site owner done lots of link building enough to offset the negative impact or lucky enough to build link with quality sites.

I think Text Link Ads must have suffered quite a bit from this recent PR adjustment. Personally, i’ve just cancelled most of my link renewal as most of the site’s PR dropped significantly, typically from PR 6/7 to PR 3/4. The marketplace now probably flooded with PR 4 sites.

Somehow i have a feeling that link building with reciprocal links is more favourable instead… even though everyone underated it. Reciprocal link building is natural, link buying is un-natural. Anyway, i dislike doing 3-way link exchange, i’ve met enough webmasters that said they “accidentally removed” the link. I think purchasing link from very related sites is still viable… but not from directory, directory link are now worthless.

With so many sites being knocked to PR 4 … i guess sites with PR 5 and above are probably even more valuable now. Perhaps this is what google wants. Anything above PR 5 are of high quality content and info… not just having tons of backlinks.

Now… the next task for SEO specialists… speculate the factors affecting the PR.

Anyway…. dont be bothered by PR too much. I have a PR 3 site having over 10k daily visitors and have a PR 5 site having only 500 daily visitors. So PR doesnt mean much except to flaunt it to fellow webmasters 😀 What’s more important is SERP. Work on your SERP, good traffic is more important than anything else for a website.
