Interesting idea - I've been spamming those guys with my blog for a while, but not advertised any ad space there yet! :D

Tell your visitors to install the alexa plugin!

I did here: http://blogsformoney.com/post/Boost-Your-Alexa-Rank---Install-The-Alexa-Toolbar.aspx

I made it look like I was doing it for them (promising it would boost their Alexa ranks) but I actually just wanted more of my visitors to have it installed to boost my own rank :-)

PageRank *shouldn't* be everything, but a whole lot of stuff is based on it (which IMO shouldn't), like ReviewMe and WebsiteGrader. My site is new as as such PR0, but tools on the web say I'm estimated PR5, so I really want the update to happen sooner rather than later so I can brag it on my Advertising page! :D

Yes, I guess I fall in the category that everyone else falls into in that I'm waiting on the page rank update. I realize (unlike a lot of people) that Page Rank isn't everything. But I also realize that if you have it and have a good one, you will get more people wanting to advertise on your site. It's unfortunate that we look at a site's worth in numbers (RSS subscribers, PageRank, Alexa Rank, etc) instead of looking at it for what content it presents, but it's just a fact. If you don't have Page Rank, you will have a more difficult time selling ad space.

It's a good idea though to start selling from day one (or maybe day 30, just so you have some content there). I'm thinking about starting to sell some on my site, just not sure how to go about it so that I don't make my readers think I'm only in it for money. I am in it for money as I have bills, hosting costs, etc., but that's not the main reason I build and publish sites. I do it because I like to do it, but it still would be nice to make some money to pay for the fees that you naturally incur from running a site.

I was holding off for the PR update but I decided to just go for it and set sell some direct advertising. So far $124 of it has been sold, and it's going well. Great advice :)

I sphunn it here:

I pretty much came to my own conclusion after your earlier advice to monetize immediately, that even if my site didn't have a PR or good rankings in general, it still has readership and traffic, so that still counts for something. This is great advice for people who over-worry that their sites are worth nothing without good 'official (popular) rankings'. Will include this post in my own roundup - a must-read.

I personally don't put much weight in PageRank, but I guess that's because I'm not looking to buy links. I see so much about people waiting in anticipation of the next update. I guess it can be important, but personally I'm not too concerned.
